The Heart Sutra: Form is Emptiness, Emptiness is form
The words like a chant came back to me repeatedly as I painted. I explored one form after another asking the various phenomena to open this wisdom to view. I painted forests ranged across mountains, greens and blues fading into the distance, then blending into one another; then waves crashing against one another and into a crimson shore. Finally I sought the shadowed floor of a mountain stream, rocks and water-grasses magnified, distorted, the clear water flowing over them. The precise place I pictured in my mind was Otter Creek, a shady stream that runs along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. The “scene” is the gateway. The stream is the form inviting us into the emptiness. The chant runs on and on — “form is emptiness, emptiness is form; emptiness is not separate from form, form is not separate from emptiness; whatever is form is emptiness, whatever is emptiness is form” —reminding us of the ultimately unignorable truth: it is through the particular we are ushered into the groundless ground.
