This painting is particularly significant to me because of its associations. First, it is a painting of the lake on which I grew up, a reservoir in deep East Texas which, along with roads and cemeteries, erased all evidence of the little village settled by one branch of my family when they came to Texas before its War of Independence. As a boy, before the land was flooded, I searched for arrowheads and pottery left behind by the original tribes that occupied that land long before my family arrived. And after the land was flooded, I fished that lake on early mornings and late afternoons when the tall pines along the shores shadowed the deep waters just as you see them here. This place is indelibly engraved on my memory. Second, this painting was in the private collection for several years of a native of those piney woods who died last year. The painting was returned to me, and it has hung in my studio for months. It is now in the gallery.
